About the Author
Sheldon Knoespel currently teaches chemistry part time at Jackson Community College in Jackson, Michigan. He also serves as a science education instructor at Michigan State University and site coordinator for the Michigan Science Olympiad state tournament. Sheldon has also served as one of the committee members for the Laboratory Practical section of the American Chemical Society's United States National Chemistry Olympiad Exam. Previously Sheldon was employed with the MSU Department of Chemistry where he was Chemical Demonstrator for fourteen years. Prior to that he taught at Olivet High School, Olivet, Michigan, where he taught all of the physical sciences, including AP Chemistry, for more than twenty years.

Tina Ohn-Sabatello has been teaching honors and AP Chemistry for sixteen years at Maine East High School in Park Ridge, Illinois. Each year, her students achieve mostly 4's and 5's on the AP Chemistry exam. She also has taught for five summer terms at Triton Community College. Tina has B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She was one of five members of the SAT II Chemistry Test Development Committee. During her five-year term working for ETS, she wrote and revised chemistry questions for the subject matter test with one other high school teacher, three college professors, and two ETS consultants.

Gordon Morlan taught chemistry for forty years; the last twenty years included AP Chemistry. He served as Science Department Chairman at Grosse Pointe North High School in Michigan for twenty-nine years. Gordon was also a College Board consultant and was a reader for the AP Chemistry Examination twelve times. He is an active competitive sailor and also enjoys reading, travel, and jazz.

The Last Gentleman: What it means to pass from death to life

Marooned in New York City, displaced Southerner Will Barrett finds himself utterly abstracted
from his world and himself. When a chance encounter in Central Park leads him to make the
acquaintance of the Vaughts, fellow Southerners who knew his father, Will embarks on a journey
that he hopes will tell him what he desperately needs to know. What does he need to know?
If Will knew the answer to that, he wouldn't need the Vaughts, or the South, or the haunted
memory of his father. Traversing the country, Will seeks the one man he believes will tell
him what to do. Percy not only weaves a lush character study of lost Will, but realizes
a profound meditation on the nature of identity, place, and home. Above all, like any
good picaresque novel, Will's journey is not so much about the end, but about what he discovers along the way. However, as a testament to
Percy's imagination and probity, Will's final destination provides nothing less than utter
revelation. I closed this book and jumped out of bed immediately, my breath coming in gulps
as I absorbed and processed what Walker Percy had taught me with such love, patience, beauty
and truth.

A characterization of the human condition

Deceptively meandering at first, slow to take root in the mind, Percy's 'The Last Gentleman' will reward persistent readers with an egrossing and entertaining characterization of the human condition. Will Barrett is the literary everyman who is never happy when things are pleasant, never satisfied at the feast, never more invigorated than when his contemporaries feel hopeless. And he doesn't have any idea why. A richly sympbolic telescope brings him into an encounter with a lovely young woman, a dying youth, a pornographic and incompetent doctor and a 'mean as hell' nun - all in the same family. While Barrett travels with this crew and ponders the unanswerable questions that continue to plague him, he becomes aware that the sick youth's 'salvation' may be 'up to' him. This is a skillful novel with elusive, eclectic characters surrounding a young protagonist whose only crime is an honest search for the truth, so that his life will take on some real meaning. The scene where Barrett converses with the nun while she feeds viscera to a bird of prey is particularly insightful and stimulating. A meaty, complex, thinking-person's novel.

A pilgrimage of observation

Will Barrett, often bemused, confused, and having the uncanny ability to take on the characteristics of others to fit in as needed, seeks the meaning of life through his telescope (his powers of observation as well as a literal telescope), and a journey prompted by a girl he spys on in Central Park. While Will feels lost to himself, struggling with modern morality, the "new" South, and his family history, those he meets on his often humorous journey from New York back to the South, and finally, the new frontier of the West, often mistake him as the salvation to ease their own paths. Walker Percy is the master of fusing philosopy, religion, and an examination of the pitfalls in modern life with humor and storytelling.

Very Insightful and Helpful

I had been out of work for awhile and was curious about what I could do to boost my morale. This book provides some great and often over-looked ways about how to keep your mind occupied when you're out of work. The author writes in an approachable way and included some questions in the book for you to answer. It should be noted that this isn't a book on how to interview or dress for success, but rather what steps people should consider taking if they're unemployed. It definitely helped me get out of a mental rut, and it's a quick read, which is nice.

About the Author

Robert Mankoff is the cartoon editor of The New Yorker. He is also a cartoonist, and more than 900 of his cartoons have been published in the magazine in the past thirty years, including the best-selling New Yorker cartoon of all time. He is the author of the book The Naked Cartoonist, published in 2002, about the creative process behind developing magazine-style cartoons. He has also edited dozens of cartoon books and published four of his own.

Lee Lorenz became a staff cartoonist for The New Yorker in 1958. He was the magazine's art editor from 1973 to 1993, and its cartoon editor until 1997. He is the author of The Art of The New Yorker as well as Here It Comes and Now Look What You've Done. Lorenz has served as president of the Cartoonists' Guild and lives in a rustic corner of Connecticut.

Perhaps the Best Collection in the Series Thus Far

This is one of the titles in a series of anthologies of subject-specific cartoons which first appeared in The New Yorker, a magazine to which I have subscribed since I was enrolled in college. Once again, Robert Mankoff serves as editor and once again, he has made excellent choices. Mankoff is the founder and president of The Cartoon Bank and cartoon editor of The New Yorker. His own cartoons have been published in that magazine since 1974.

At the outset, I acknowledge the difficulty of discussing cartoons without benefit of having them displayed...and this is especially true of New Yorker cartoons. Those who create the best of them have a unique talent for combining precisely the correct illustration and caption. Styles vary from one artist to the next, of course, but so many New Yorker cartoons suggest an urban lifestyle perspective with an emphasis on wit and whimsy. That is even true of so-called "sick humor" as found in Charles Addams' cartoons, for example. FYI, Addams is not among the artists represented in this volume.

Some cartoons require no caption such as one drawn by Lee Stevens which features a building behind a prominent lawn sign whose message serves as a caption: "The Knowledge Hut® formerly P.S. 102." Other cartoons have an extensive caption such as one devised by George Booth in which a wife is commenting on their daughter's schoolwork. "Sarah's grades are excellent. She got an A+ in `Yogi Berra: Philosopher or Fall Guy?,' A in `Dollars and Scents: An Analysis of Post-Vietnam Perfume Advertising,' A- in `The Final Four as Last Judgment: The N.C.A.A. Tournament from a Religious Perspective,' and A in `The American Garage Sale: Its Origins, Cultural Implications, and Future.'" The husband is understandably dismayed.

The works of artists such as Stevens, Booth, Lee Lorenz, Warren Miller, Charles Saxon, William Steig, and James Stevenson are immediately familiar to me and other long-time subscribers to The New Yorker. As another of their drawings appears in a new issue, I am curious to learn what their latest comment is on the human condition. Thus was my reaction when coming upon several drawings in this volume, ones I did not recall seeing previously, by artists style is almost instantly recognizable. My point is that New Yorker cartoons can certainly offer cultural insights concerning a given era (e.g. The Great Depression) as well as a given subject (e.g. business) but their humor is never dated.

A few brief concluding comments about the selections in this volume. The perspectives offered include those of parents and students as well as those of teachers. Having taught for 24 years (13 of them in two New England boarding schools), I can personally attest to the authenticity of those situations portrayed in which education seems to be much less important than establishing and then maintaining control over whatever, making certain reassurances now to avoid unpleasant situations later, or at least "showing an interest" whose sincerity is questionable. Almost all of the situations seem to involve private school or upper scale public school situations as one would expect, given the demographics of the magazine's clientele.

My favorite drawing (in this volume) was created by Robert Weber. We see the stage in an elementary school auditorium where a teacher is conducting her rehearsal of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. Stage left is a small boy struggling to carry a huge suitcase. Stage center, a table and two chairs. Two others in the cast stand dutifully next to the teacher, a copy of the script in hand, while several others sit on the floor behind them. My guess is that these are 4th or 5th grade students. Caption: "O.K., Willy, drag yourself to the table and collapse in despair. Enter Biff."

Those who delight in such cartoons are encouraged to check out the other volumes in the series which focus on art, baseball, business, golf, "kids," money, politics, and technology. Great stuff!

Elementary, Middle, or High?

I received this wonderful book as a gift when I graduated with my master in teaching. It contains plenty of treasures, but I wanted to caution gift givers that the cartoons here are very heavy on the elementary school commentary. As a high school teacher, I didn't find a ton that were really applicable to my daily experiences. Still though, I've enjoyed flipping through it and chuckling at the lil'uns.

A hit at the Christmas Party

My Husband is a High School Teacher. I bought this for him to contribute to the teachers gift exchange during their Christmas Party. It was a real hit. The book is rather short but it is what you would expect. I couldn't resist going through the whole book as soon as it arrived. I enjoyed every minute of it. It was a great purchase and I would definitely purchase again.

About the Author

Brent Edstrom is author of Musicianship In the Digital Age, Oscar Peterson Plays Standards, and Bill Evans: A Step-by-Step Breakdown of the Piano Styles and Techniques of a Jazz Legend. He has worked as a session player and arranger for many recording projects and has arranged and orchestrated music for national acts including Carmen Bradford, Dee Daniels and Freda Payne. Edstrom currently teaches jazz studies, music theory and composition at Whitworth University.

Great into into recording.

This book is a great starting point if you are interested in recording high quality audio. Musicians, podcasters, singers and even videographers will learn about how to get great sounding audio without breaking the bank. The author does a nice job of reviewing software and hardware options available with lots of specific recommendations.

There is just enough technical so you get an understanding of the important concepts without bogging you down with unimportant details. There are a lot of illustrations in the the book especially to demonstrate concepts and the do it yourself projects.

As a bonus there are lots of online examples to help you listen to the results you are getting and fix any issues that you may be having with your recording.

Overall a great read.

This is knowledge applied, written for everyone, both professional and novice.

The title of this book does it little justice. What's within this well written book is so much more than just 'recording on a budget'. The most useful stuff I digested had more to do with understanding the complexities of acoustics and sound, that entity which fills the air that we try to capture with the utmost fidelity within the confines of our walls. That's my focus and Brent doesn't just describe how to accomplish this but he explains why and how it all works and what you should and maybe shouldn't do. Almost every home-recording blog addresses the subject of sound absorbers and diffusers and before you decide to go thru the expense and time of building either, read what this book has to say about them. What may work for someone else may not work for you, and the reasons are explained in detail. The complex nature of frequency analysis is broken down in clear, easy to understand concepts that Brent will often say 'goes beyond the scope of this material', after which he clearly explains. Put simply, this book covers what you need to know. Whether you're building your own computer, mixing desk, equipment racks, speaker stands, or want to create your own quality balanced cables, the DIY projects explain and walk you thru each step. Recording, mixing and mastering techniques are clearly examined and described, supported with illustrations, tables, and images that guide you through each process. If you think you don't have that ear which can discern the very subtle differences in sound, then you need to read this book. I've been a musician most of my life and have been into recording for almost 30 years and I found this book insightful and enjoyable. It's the kind of book you'll want to keep within reach.

Buy used, not new!

First I'll state that as a shop manual the information contained within this book is great and indispenable. The author cleary describes the processes and tools needed to build stop motion armatures. What is disappointing is the quality of the book itself. I have a few books for which I have paid fifty dollars for (The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation, Ray Harryhausen: An Animated Life, Industrial Light and Magic: The Art of Special Effects) and I have never had buyers remorse. The same cannot be said here. The cover belies the interior quality. This book is approximately one quarter inch thick with poor quality paper stock which I can only describe as better than a childs coloring book. All of the photographs are black and white. Many are extremely grainy with contrast that is too high and resolution so poor that it is hard to see what is being described accurately (See figures 2-10, 3-4, 3-5, 3-10, 4-9, 4-10, 4-13 as examples). Not what I expected at this price point. The same information also applies to Stop-Motion Puppet Sculpting. I strongly suggest you either buy used or take what I have written into consideration before purchasing new.

Shows you what you need to know to design and construct high-quality stop-motion armatures using a mill and other machinists' tools. I have not yet tried to make one, but I feel confident that I can following the instructions included here.

Terrfic Resource for Armature Machining

I was very reticent in purchasing this book after reading all of the reviews. It is true that the pictures are not the highest resolution, are in black and white and the total number of pages is few. However that doesn't negate what a wonderful resource this book is. This is the first book I have seen that goes into such depth in how to machine armatures from aluminum and steel. Other books gloss over this process. This text is focused solely on that process which is exactly what I was looking for. If you are looking for text that covers the whole scope of stop motion animation, this is not that book. However, if you are looking for further insight into this specialized process, this book is a great investment.

Cornel West is Class of 1943 University Professor in the Center for African American Studies at Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey. Eddie S. Glaude Jr. is William S. Tod Professor of Religion and African American Studies and Chair of the Center for African American Studies at Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey. He is the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, including the 2002 Modern Language Association William Sanders Scarborough Prize for his book Exodus!. His work also includes African-American Religious Thought: An Anthology, coedited with Cornel West.

The author is good at the presentation of the answers in his books

British humor and sense of understatement reighs here. I am of the opinion that the students who made up these answers should get an E or an American A for comic imagination. The author is good at the presentation of the answers in his books, which often included the drawings and doodles found on the test papers. Good for a belly laugh after a long tense day at work.

I bought this book in order to get an insight into the world of script readers which it turns out is being taught as a course on a university level in the UK. For a screenwriters like me this is important to know since our whole career might depend on professional script readers, at least in Europe.
I found the book informative and it comes up with some good points on steps in the screenwriting development process.
It's good to know that the people who are reading scripts for production companies, film funds and TV networks are getting a proper knowledge of how a script works and is written, but I must say that I'm a little bit worried that all the standards and formulas that the book presents might make it harder for original stories to find production in the future. Nevertheless that seems to be the trend of the film business in both Europe and USA these days, that requires stories to fit perfectly into certain genres for the right market and there doesn't seem to be much that anyone can do about it.
