“Quality of Life” and “Health Outcomes” and other terms referring to the physical, mental and emotional effects experienced by people as they encounter health challenges are in wide use and misuse in the health care and health research community. Many of these terms are used interchangeably without recognizing that they have completely different meanings and, thus, require different measurement approaches and different types of interventions if they are to be optimized. The notion of creating a “dictionary” of these terms arose so that novices and experts, researchers and clinicians, can commonly address these health outcome challenges. The correct term for this collection of definitions is a “vocabulary for a vertical audience” as the definitions reflect the usage in QOL and health outcomes measurement rather than all usages and the definitions were written to have meaning for the novice while still being useful for the expert

As a starting point for the vocabulary, terms were chosen based on the frequency of use in journal articles focussing on of quality of life research. The terms fall broadly into 8 concepts all of which have an identified need for consistent and correct terminology: research process, measurement properties, statistics for QOL research, designs for QOL research, patient reported outcomes (PROs), theories and models, knowledge translation, and personal factors. Rather than being “A malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic” (Ambrose Bierce, The Devil’s Dictionary), “This dictionary, however, is a most useful work.” (Ambrose Bierce, The Devil’s Dictionary).

To avoid the “devil”, terms reflecting modern advances in outcomes research and design were included even they may not yet be in common usage in QOL research. For example, while designs like the stepped wedge or platform trials may not yet have penetrated the world of QOL research, they will not if no one knows about them. More than 20 people contributed definitions and following editing, the dictionary was opened up for review and comment from members of ISOQOL and their suggestions and modifications were included, adding a component of peer review to the process.

Nancy E. Mayo, PhD Nancy Mayo is a Professor at McGill University in the Department of Medicine, Division of Clinical Epidemiology, and School of Physical and Occupational Therapy. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, she trained as a Physical Therapist at Queen’s University, and after several years of working clinically, she completed a doctoral degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, at McGill University. She has been educating health professionals and clinical researchers for over 25 years and has published over 200 scientific works in the peer reviewed medical literature as well as contributing to collective works such as Medical Uses of Statistics 4th Edition (Ed. Bailar and Hoaglin) and Physical Rehabilitation Outcome Measures (Finch, Brooks, Stafford, Mayo). Mayo has also written a number of scientific papers specifically related to education on research methods and statistics. The Dictionary of Quality of Life and Health Outcomes Measurement was inspired by students and was assembled as a way of helping novices and experts alike to “speak the same language” about measuring these important health outcomes; essentially, the intent was to improve the research-related quality of life of people working in this important field.

About the Author
David L. Steinberg has been The University of Miami's director of debate since 1990. His teams are respected, successful, and have won many awards. They participate in competitive policy debate, parliamentary debate, and frequent public debates. Steinberg was the president of the Cross Examination Debate Association in 2006-2007. CEDA is the professional organization which sponsors and represents intercollegiate policy debate teams in the United States. Steinberg serves in national leadership positions in the American Forensic Association and the National Communication Association. At The University of Miami, he is a lecturer in Communication Studies and teaches courses in Communication Theory, Persuasion, Rhetorical Theory and Criticism, Organizational Communication, Political Communication, Public Speaking, Business Communication, and Argumentation and Debate. His research and scholarly efforts include Argument in the Public Sphere, Political Communication and Campaign Debates, Academic Debate and Pedagogy, and Rhetorical Criticism. Steinberg is adviser to the Miami Dade Urban Debate League, Lambda Pi Eta Communication Studies Honorary, The National Communication Association Student Club at UM, and the UM Chapter of Delta Sigma Rho-Tau Kappa Alpha National Forensics Honorary. Steinberg has served as a mentor in the UM Student Athlete Mentoring Program and is a lecturer for the Butler Center for Leadership and Service, the University of Miami Freshman Experience, and the Intensive English Program. He holds a Master's Degree in Communication from The University of Tennessee and has completed significant post-graduate work in Communication Studies, Education, and Human Resource Development from The Pennsylvania State University and from Florida International University. Prior to joining the faculty at UM, Steinberg taught and directed debaters at Middle Tennessee State, Penn State, George Mason, and Towson Universities.

Fare Book - Nasty Price

The book is very basic (almost superficial) but covers most of the important ground well enough. However, it has two major draw-backs:
1)Anyone familiar with Debate or Critical Thinking, will find that it offers very little that is new.
2)The Price - There is no way to justify the high price of the book. It has very low value for money.
In short - If you are an absolute novice, look for it in a library, otherwise you could better use your time and money.

Good First Book from this Author

I enjoyed the storyline and was able to get lost at times in the tale. This book was the first publication of this author, and it does display a bit of novice tendencies, but he does fine work of weaving a story together that makes you want to keep reading to find out what is going to happen next.

For at least a century, scholarship on realist narrative, and occasional polemics against realist narrative, have assumed that realism promotes the values of sameness against those of otherness, and that it does so by use of a narrative mode that excludes certain epistemologies, ideologies, and ways of thinking. However, the truth is more complex than that, as the essays in this volume all demonstrate. Realism's Others examines the various strategies by which realist narratives create the idea of difference, whether that difference is registered in terms of class, ethnicity, epistemology, nationality, or gender. The authors in this collection examine in detail not just the fact of otherness in some canonical realist and canonical magical-realist and postmodern novels, but the actual means by which that otherness is established by the text. These essays suggest that neither realist narrative nor narratives positioned as anti-realist take otherness for granted; rather, the texts discussed here actively create difference, and this creation of difference often occasions severe difficulties for the novels' representational schema. How does one represent different types of knowledge, other aesthetic modes or other spaces, for example, in texts whose epistemology has long been seen as secular and empirical, whose aesthetic mode has always been approached as pure descriptive mimesis, and whose settings are largely domestic? These essays all begin with a certain collision-of nationalities, of classes, of representational matrices, of religions-and go on to chart the challenges that this collision presents to our ideas or stereotypes of realism, or to the possibilities of writing against and beyond realism. This question motivates examination of key realist or social-realist texts, in some of these essays, by Honoré de Balzac, George Eliot, Franz Grillparzer, Theodor Storm, Gottfried Keller, Theodor Fontane, Wilhelm Raabe, María Amparo Ruiz de Burton, Henry James, William Dean Howells, Charles Chesnutt, Theodore Dreiser, H. T. Tsiang, Alan Sillitoe, and Richard Yates. However, it is no less central a question in certain non-realist texts which engage realist aims to a surprising degree, often to debate them openly; some of these essays discuss, in this light, fantastic, magical realist, and postmodern works by Abram Tertz, Paul Auster, Alejo Carpentier, Toni Morrison, Gabriel García Márquez, Salman Rushdie, and A. S. Byatt. Realism becomes more than an aesthetic aim or narrative mode. It becomes, rather, a value evoked and discussed by all of the works analyzed here, in order to reveal its impact on fiction's treatment of ethnicity, nationality, ideology, space, gender, and social class.

Geoffrey Baker is Assistant Professor of Comparative and British Literature and Undergraduate Adviser in the English Department at California State University, Chico. In addition to articles on political aesthetics and realism, he has published Realism s Empire: Empiricism and Enchantment in the Nineteenth-Century Novel (Ohio State UP, 2009). Eva Aldea is a tutor at Goldsmiths College, University of London and Westminster University. She is the author of Magical Realism and Deleuze: The Indiscernibility of Difference (Continuum, 2010).
