Helping children become literate is one of the greatest challenges facing teachers today. As some teachers and researchers tout and defend one approach after another, parents are frightened that the new instructional methods aren't getting the job done. The media fuels the controversy with reports lamenting low test scores and criticism that many schools are failing to produce literate citizens who can function competently.

I have written this textbook to blaze a pathway toward implementing a thoughtful, balanced approach to teaching reading and writing in the early grades, a pathway that incorporates the most effective teaching approaches and strategies.

Literacy for the 21st Century: Teaching Reading and Writing in Pre-Kindergarten Through Grade 4 builds on the research-based approaches to literacy instruction outlined in Literacy for the 21st Century, the most popular reading methods text in the market, but focuses squarely on the issues, concerns, and opportunities involved in teaching children in pre-kindergarten through grade 4.

I created this text for core literacy courses that have been split to meet a growing demand for credentialing teachers with more in-depth knowledge of early literacy strategies, aiming to provide a solid foundation for teaching phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. This comprehensive text presents sound approaches to literacy instruction and guides teachers toward best practice in teaching skills as well as strategies. The principles of effective reading instruction outlined in Chapter 1 provide a strong, easily understood foundation for the entire book. I have culled and created minilessons and assessment tools geared specifically toward assessing and teaching PreK-4 skills; the authentic classroom activities and student artifacts include spotlights on primary teachers who illustrate how they plan for and engage their students in literacy activities; and PreK margin notes address the specific concerns of this audience of learners.

DRIVING PRINCIPLES My goal in this text is to show beginning teachers how to teach reading and writing effectively in the early grades, how to create a classroom climate where literacy flourishes, and how to empower the diverse array of young children in today's classrooms to function competently as literate adults in the twenty-first century. To that end, I have based the text on four contemporary theories of literary learning: constructivist, interactive, socio-linguistic, and reader response theories.

Readers will learn how to implement a reading program with skills and strategies taught in context using a whole-part-whole organizational approach. The approach I take can, I believe, best be described as balanced and comprehensive. You will learn how to teach vital skills and strategies within the context of authentic reading and writing experiences. I have carefully selected the principles, skills, strategies, and examples of literature that will empower the beginning teachers to get up to speed quickly with their young readers. In creating this textbook, I used knowledge I gleaned from a host of teachers who have been students in my beginning reading course over the years, and I also sifted through the array of practices and procedures proven effective in today's classrooms and with today's diverse student populations. Although there are many other useful ideas and strategies that can accomplish the goal of producing literate students, I have deliberately and painstakingly chosen research-based, classroom-tested ideas-the best of the best-as the focus of this textbook.

    SPECIAL FEATURES

These special features increase the effectiveness of the text and address the most current resources in the field of literacy.

    Instructional Procedures

The easily accessible Compendium of Instructional Procedures following Chapter 12 offers clearly articulated instructional methods, an invaluable resource and quick reference.

    Real Classrooms

My texts have always been grounded in real classroom teaching and learning. I want readers to feel as at home in their own classrooms as possible, so I provide as many examples from real classrooms as I can, to model best practice and teacher decision-making.

    • Spotlights look closely at individual students and teachers, including student artifacts and an analysis of each student's strengths and weaknesses, highlighting individual attention, assessment and evaluation, and the best teaching practices while emphasizing a focus on struggling readers and English language learners.
    • Starting with Chapter 2, I begin each chapter with a vignette in which you will see how a real teacher teaches the topic addressed in the chapter. These vignettes are rich and detailed, with chapter-opening photos, dialogue, student writing samples, and illustrations. Readers will be drawn into the story of literacy instruction in a real classroom as they build background and activate prior knowledge about the chapter's topic. Throughout the chapter, I refer readers to the vignette so that they can apply the concepts they are reading about and make connections to the world of practice.
    • The CD-ROM, the CD margin notes, and the CD insert all provide concrete illustrations of real classroom teaching and connections between chapter content and teaching.
    Technology

I have taken an integrated approach to technology in this text, highlighting resources and applications within the text and including technological resources as part of the text package.

CD-ROM. A free CD comes with my text. The CD, Primary Grades Literacy: A K-3 Integrated Unit on Insects, contains footage of a master teacher in her early grades reading and writing classroom. You will have the opportunity to observe the classroom footage, hear from the teacher and students involved, listen to my feedback, and consider the research behind the teacher's decisions.

    • Margin notes throughout the text serve to link specific chapter content with that of the CD.
    • A full-color insert walks you through using the CD to the fullest.

Technology Links: Readers will learn about innovative uses of technology in teaching reading and writing through the Technology Links. Among the topics I present in these special features are screen reading using captioned text on television to develop reading fluency and interactive electronic books on CD-ROM to teach high-frequency words and phonics skills.

Companion Website: Providing more ways to use technology effectively as a teaching tool, the Companion Website, available at www.prenhall.com/tompkins, offers opportunities for self-assessment; analysis, synthesis and application of concepts; regularly updated links to web addresses; and special information for teachers required to pass state tests in teaching reading in order to obtain credentials.

    • Margin notes throughout the text highlight Internet websites that provide resources that readers might use to extend their learning and read the most up-to-date information about phonics, phonemic awareness, guided reading, interactive writing, fluency, comprehension, literature circles, and other literacy topics. Links to these sites are found on the Companion Website.
    English Language Learners

Throughout the text are ELL margin notes specifying which strategies and methods are most appropriate for English language learners and how to adapt teaching to benefit all students.

    Pre-kindergarten Learners

PreK margin notes make clear the most appropriate strategies and adaptations for that age range.

    Mini-lessons

This feature presents clear information showing how to teach skills and strategies within the PreK-4 reading and writing classrooms.

    Assessment

Assessment Resources: These features in Chapter 3 list tests and other assessments that can be used to gauge students' reading level and their progress in learning to read and write.

Assessment Tools: These figures in most chapters provide samples of tools used in classrooms to assess student understanding and learning.

    Supplements

Companion Website: This text-specific website featuring chapter overviews, self assessments, links to sites highlighted in the text, and a threaded message board to promote student dialogue with a national audience, is available at www.prenhall.com/tompkins.

CD-ROM. Containing classroom footage, this free supplement allows users to view, examine, and manipulate clips of PreK-4 literacy classroom teaching, ideal for reflection and developing a deep, lasting understanding of text content.

Video: Free to adopters, the video Guidelines for Reading Comprehension Instruction contains footage of Gail Tompkins providing guidance for preservice and inservice literacy teachers.

Instructor's Manual: This useful tool provides additional support for instructors, including test questions and online integration.

From Genesis to Genocide: The Meaning of Human Nature and the Power of Behavior Control (MIT Press), by Stephan L Chorover

In From Genesis to Genocide, Stephan Chorover proposes that popular theories of human nature linked with current efforts to solve serious social problems can be seen as powerful instruments of behavior control. From Genesis to Genocide explores this borderline between psychology and politics, between meaning and power. It focuses on recurrent ideas about human diversity, tracing the process by which various methods of behavior control have been invented and fostered in order to justify the interests and objectives of influential social groups.Written in an engagin, clear and frankly opinionated style From Genesis to Genocide makes striking observations about past and present developments in such controversial areas as I.Q. testing, violence, crime, juvenile delinquency, mental illness, psychosurgery, racial strife, sex discrimination, drug addiction, and law enforcement. It provides an incisive and timely critique of theories that treat social conflict as the result of biological or psychological defects in inferior groups or individuals. Using examples drawn from many sources, Chorover shows that theories of human nature and methods of behavior control cannot be understood independently from each other and from the much broader social context of which they are a part.

A wide-ranging study of the mechanisms of social control
    By e. verrillo
Chorover's basic argument is that the psych disciplines (psychology, psychiatry, psychoanalysis), do not operate from a neutral position. Instead, they bolster and perpetuate ideas about humanity that are inherently flawed. The fundamental idea that Chorover challenges is that the social stratification of human beings is not biologically pre-determined. While on the surface, this would appear to be an obvious fact, the biological "fitness" of some people over others is very much ingrained in our society. (Just look at our unquestioned belief in IQ tests.) Chorover traces how sociobiological ideas developed from Plato through the Social Darwinists. Then he describes how those concepts were put into effect by prison officials, school boards, state legislatures, and Nazis through policies whose sole purpose was the elimination and control of those who were determined to be "unfit." The "scientific" support used to enact these policies was provided by mental health practitioners, who not only supplied "proof" that certain groups were inherently inferior to others, but spearheaded legislation that resulted in thousands of forced sterilizations and millions of deaths.

While I found Chorover's arguments to be compelling and well constructed, I felt as if he had bitten off more than he could chew. There are a number of philosophical examinations of these ideas (Foucault's Discipline and Punish is among the best) which ultimately do more with the topic. And while Chorover illustrates his points with many well researched examples, he might have made his argument more effectively with a narrower focus.

As an introduction to sociobiology this would be a great place to start. The writing is clear and Chorover's arguments are thoroughly researched. If you are interested Hitler's extermination of mental patients, Chorover's account is second only to Lifton's exhaustive study of Nazi doctors.

    Deadpool Corps Rocks!!!
    By zombie phreak
Deadpool has to be one of the most hilarious Marvel Comics characters that has ever been written. Seeing him with a team of other Deadpools from other dimensions or where ever they came from, was just awesome! It's non-stop wisecracks, Bea Arthur jokes, Hot Pockets jokes and of course, tons of fighting and epic violence like only Deadpool can give us.

The plot is that these Deadpools are out and trying to stop a strange cloud that is devouring worlds and will destroy Earth as well if it is not stopped. So from challenging champions to combat, to fighting space pirates to epic space battles, this comic keeps your interest from the first page until the very end! And while doing this, it also manages to poke some fun at the Green Lantern Corps. As a long time fan of the GL, I have to admit that this didn't upset me, it made me laugh!

The last thing about this comic that I really enjoyed was that it was actually had Rob Liefeld as one of the pencilers. He actually did a pretty good job and the characters looked great!

If you are a fan of Deadpool and all his craziness, you will love this comic! Check it out!

    So many Deadpools
    By B. Manning
There is a five issue preview to Deadpool Corps that you should read before this because it is very cool, but you don't Need to follow the story.
But this is about Pool-Pocalypse now. Deadpool now leads a team of 4 other versions of himself. Lady Deadpool that we saw first in Merc with a Mouth. Headpool which is the zombie head of the Marvel Zombie universe deadpool. And Kid Pool and Dog Pool. They are tasked with defeating an evil that threatens the multiverse that they are uniquely perfect to handle. They have wacky adventures along the way. Constantly running afoul of the Champion who thinks he should be the one to face this big evil. But since there is money on the line the Corps wants the job. Bonus we get to find out what Deadpool fears most.
The second volume of this series shows the Corps trying to quell a rebellion/switching sides to fight with the rebels/ and then of course only think of themselves.

    Amazon.com Review
Virtually everyone enjoys a crisply ironed dress shirt, clean sheets on a well-made bed, and a savory home-cooked meal. Yet housekeeping today stands as a somewhat neglected, if not maligned, job. But as author Cheryl Mendelson points out in Home Comforts, keeping house well can be a rewarding position--it allows you to provide for the physical and emotional comfort of loved ones. It's also not an easy job--there's much to be learned about properly managing a home, and Mendelson has set out to provide a guide to doing just that.

Mendelson, a homemaker, lawyer, and mother, learned about housekeeping from an early age from her grandmothers, one Appalachian, the other Italian. The two grandmothers taught her that although different ways of keeping house can be appropriate, there are generally smarter, faster, and more creative ways of housekeeping that make it less of a chore and more of an art. In a practical, authoritative tone, Mendelson discusses the ins and outs of homemaking, such as washing dishes, recommended cleaning methods for various surfaces, housekeeping for those with pets or allergies, and emergency preparedness and safety procedures.

Mendelson's well-researched book includes meticulous sections on food (for example, which foods belong in the fridge versus the pantry, food storage times, picking the freshest fruits and vegetables, and keeping your kitchen and food sanitary) as well as laundry (caring for various fabrics, how to read--and read between the lines of--clothing care labels, and removing stains). Mendelson covers a lot of ground, and as she herself points out, readers shouldn't feel required to do everything mentioned in the book--simply pick the activities that seem appropriate for your particular home. This is a comprehensive reference book that should serve homemakers well and induce a greater appreciation for the effort and specialized knowledge that go into keeping house. --Kris Law

    From Library Journal
Unlike the shelves of short-cut manuals for people who don't enjoy housework, Mendelson's comprehensive book is for the person who wants detailed information on every aspect of setting up and maintaining a clean, well-functioning home. Building on the strong domestic skills she learned from her family, Mendelson, a lawyer, did careful research, incorporating current recommendations from experts. There are extensive sections on food, clothing, cleanliness, daily life, and safety, with information on negligence, domestic employment laws, insurance, and even the impact of clothing label laws on our laundry. Preferred methods are explained in detail, and some alternatives are offered for those who need to compromise. This is a valuable tool for today's masses, who aren't learning domestic skills from their elders. Readers with only a cursory interest or those wanting a highly illustrated guide may prefer Reader's Digest's Householder's Survival Manual (1999). Highly recommended.ABonnie Poquette, Shorewood P.L., WI

    Dust Bunnies Be Gone
    By A Customer
I have a job, large home, relaxed husband, a couple of children, dogs, cats, etc. Maintaining a clean and organized home is something I aspire to but never seem to achieve. Heavens, when my Italian mother comes to visit, I go into a cleaning frenzy because she adhers to the cleanliness is next to godliness philosophy and I dread disappointing her with my casual household.
So with all this on my plate, why did I find Cheryl Medndelson's book so fascinating? Probably because it was so well written about a subject I thought I knew something about. Boy, did she open up my thinking to new and productive ways of managing a home. I am trying quite a few of her suggestions, although I still continue some of my slovenly ways. As a reference book, this is outstanding. If you have any questions or concerns about the most appropriate way to handle household problems, this book will have the answer and then some.
Give it a try, you might find yourself pleasantly surprised.

If it's not in this book, you don't need to know it!
    By drdebs
This is an AMAZING book! If you want the best, most detailed, and most wide-ranging book on home care this book is for you. I think it would make a great gift for a first-time home owner, or for a wedding present (perhaps accompanied by some of the cooking or cleaning tools the author recommends).
I grew up in a fanatically neat house, but because Mom was so hysterical about keeping it clean (especially vacuuming), I became a slob. I ignored how my mother cleaned, and therefore have only rudimentary (and it turns out wrong!) cleaning skills. Reaction formation, no doubt, but now that I have a home of my own my ideas about cleanliness have changed, in large part because I want the house to be restful, soothing, and welcoming.
Enter this book. I just cleaned my fridge like it's never been cleaned before, got out some very stubborn stains that have resisted every cleaner on the market, and set up a housekeeping routine that just might work.
For those of you who are groaning, fear not. There are great sections on how to outfit a kitchen with everything you need, what should be in your pantry, and how to select carpeting.
I highly recommend this book. You probably won't read it cover to cover in one sitting, but if you keep it on a shelf in your kitchen you will find yourself turning to it again and again for really good, sound advice.

    You CAN know it all!
    By Eileen G.
This book is great. The author loves householding AND research. No one has told you this stuff so intelligently and well, 'til now. Mendelson generously and nonjudgmentally shares her wealth of information about everything in the house: how, when, and why to care for it. It's not intended as self-help, but as reference. The chapter on garment care labels alone will save you hundreds of dollars a year.
