Beinn Bhreagh was a happy place, a home designed for comfort and company where all were welcome. This is the story of this period, illustrated with striking informal photographs of family, scientists and Baddeck residents.

About the Author
Cap’n Fatty Goodlander grew up aboard the 52-foot John G. Alden schooner “Elizabeth,” built in 1924. He salvaged, repaired, and skippered his first boat—a holed 16-foot rowing skiff he discovered awash in St. Petersburg, Florida—at eight years of age. At 15, he purchased ($200) the derelict 1932 Atkin-designed double-ender “Corina” in Chicago—aboard which he eloped with his wife Carolyn in 1970. At 19 years of age, he began building “Carlotta,” their 36-foot, 20,000 pound Endurance ketch in Boston. In 1989, at age 37, he salvaged his $3,000 Hughes 38 “Wild Card” after Hurricane Hugo—a heavily damaged vessel, which he and Carolyn then sailed twice around the world while raising their daughter Roma Orion. Cap’n Fatty has written ten marine-related books (see www.fattygoodlander.com) and is now on his 52nd year of living aboard. He is currently the editor-at-large of Cruising World magazine, and recently had a series of radio spots on NPR. He and his wife Carolyn are, as this publication goes to press, leisurely cruising the Mediterranean Sea while continuing to trade words-for-money.

A cruising book for the rest of us

I just read this book, practically in one sitting, and I enjoyed it immensely. Fatty Goodlander gives the average guy hope that he can live the cruising dream without winning the lotto. The book is straight forward, entertaining and, at times, brutally honest. I have read a number of books on cruising and what you need to cast off, but this book provides a recipe for putting it all together. If like me, sailing over the horizon is your dream, I recommend you give this book a read.

Fatty's Best Yet

I bought this book because I have enjoyed Fatty's other books, I have lived aboard and cruised on various boats for most of my life and wasn't expecting to get more then some laughs out of it but, not so. It is a fun read of course but it is full of great tips and ideas on maintenance. Things that would work on a gold plater too, our boat isn't that but we like to keep her looking good and thanks to Fatty we have a few short cuts. We got a few ideas on off shore preparation that we probably should have been doing all along too!!
I'm not sharing those tips in my review. I am sure that the crew of Wild Card needs to sell books to add to the cruising kitty so shell out the cash, you won't be sorry!

Clean Work!

I must admit that I was skeptical that such a young author would be able to resist the "I will show you how cool I am" temptation and produce a simple, straightforward, no frills presentation, which is exactly what a beginner needs, but this is exactly what this book is. Very clear, I would say "very clean" presentation style, step by step, with plenty of examples from the two line snippet just to explain the concept to the slightly more complex and functional to make sense of how to put jQuery to work in your pages. It manages to present the concepts and ideas in a very "organic" and structured way, giving a sense of unity and progression and avoiding the boring "api reference" style that plagues many books on software libraries.
It also gives a very gentle, useful and approachable introduction to plugin development, and this is great since this is a subject that need a little demystifying for beginners. My only gripe, it's quite a short book, It' s admirable that it manages to be so good being so short, but with a few more examples and and intro to jQery UI and mobile it would have passed from "very good book" to "exceptional work!". On the other hand, not being bulky probably makes it less intimidating for a beginner...

One of the best jQuery beginner book

If I could I would give this book 4,5 stars.
I can't believe that such youthful author has written so
structured and organized book.

Jack Franklin takes special care on readers who don't know JavaScript fundamentals and he
introduces JavaScript syntax step by step.

I especially like that author keeps focus on jQuery and assumes that reader is familiar with HTML and CSS.

Code examples are very advantageous and easy to understand.

After reading this book you will learn not only jQuery but also JavaScript programming in general.

My only complaint is that AJAX chapter was too short and as
another reviewer wrote it would be nice to see intro to jQuery UI.

If you are starting to learn or want a simple introduction to jQuery, this book gives the reader what it promises in it's title. What the author tries to accomplish is to give the reader a solid jQuery base knowledge and suceded. The book is easy to follow and the topics are clearly inrodused so that you read every part once. Before delving into the advanced jQuery topics , this book will be a big help for beginners to understand the philosopy behind jQuery.

The result is an edition that's clean and unfussy, refreshingly uncluttered by superfluous grace-notes or odd-looking demi-semiquaver ornaments ... Bartlett's edition, however, makes it perfectly possible to reconstruct the 1742 Dublin, 1743 London, or 1750 revised Messiah, according to taste, which should afford music directors hours of innocent fun. The Singer December 98 The players loved the parts - clear and clean, and I loved the edition; almost everyone in the Hall (the sell-out audience of 1200+ and all the performers) had a marvellous evening ... Please convey my congratulations to [Clifford Bartlett] and the setters and printers, and yourselves, of course, as publishers, for doing everyone such a great favour in producing this wonderful new edition - it's the one for me!! If you're going to conduct it, use this score.

I am a young conductor researching possibilities of putting on a concert of Messiah and I checked out this version of the full score from the library. If I do perform the work, this is the score I'm going to use, primarily because a) the score is very clean and easy to read, and allows the conductor to make markings/notes in the margins, and b) there is an excellent critical commentary within this score as well, which can help explaining the work to others or creating program notes.

I know that Dover produces more affordable full scores of large works, but they always voice the strings in a funky way (i.e. using alto/soprano clefs instead of the treble/bass format) and they sometimes don't have any commentary. But Bartlett's work here really is something to applaud, as it makes this tremendous piece more accessible to more musicians.
