A good book to read to learn about Nicaragua from the first hands.

I loved the book. I needed to find out more about Nicaragua after I visited the country ( I lived in a family in Granada for 2 weeks which is the best way to understand local life - I was studying in a Spanish Language School) and fell in love with it. The book gave me additional info about the difficult times of the country and was interesting to read.

I am interested in Nicaraguan history. My wife and I stood in the square in Managua where the Sandinista revolution success party was. Our Nica friend recommend reading this. It is a wonderful story of Love, War and trajedy. Gioconda is a swell writer and I have enjoyed the book from a womans perspective.

This woman is no hero.

The author is a wildly immature narcissist. I can hardly get through this book. I bought the book to learn more about Nicaraguan history and the revolution; we are traveling there this year. It is so difficult to have any respect for the reasons that compel the author to be involved in the revolution. The reader is left feeling as thought her participation in the Sandanista movement is driven more by her romantic pursuits than her ideals. I had very little respect for her as I read. Great Man, But Not A Great Book.

This book was very well written, however, there was not a lot there. I was expecting to learn more about the author's thoughts. What I got was mainly an autobiography. While this guy has an impressive story, I was more interested in how he departs from conventional socialism as it applies to the African diaspora. I can't say I was satisfied with this read.

Like the reviewer before me, I am not impressed by this book. First of all, the whole premise is problematic--the fact that it's written by a male Dom directed at female submissives who clearly have little or no BDSM experience makes it seem like he's trolling for new playthings, and inexperienced ones at that (yikes). I don't know if that's an accurate portrayal of the kind of person he is, but if not, he really needs to put a lot more thought into his writing because, as is, it's sort of overly-specific. It might as well be titled, "7 Things Submissive Women Can Do That I Personally Enjoy."

Second, some of this stuff is not smart--many forms of self-bondage are unsafe and dangerous, even if it doesn't seem that way. Do not tie yourself up, seriously. Even if it sounds fun (and it kinda does), if something goes wrong, you're in big trouble. As a Dom, I am responsible for my submissive's safety and well-being, after all, and that includes keeping an eye on them if there's anything like that involved. This is the main reason why I'm writing this review - just to say, whoa, maybe not.

Third, the whole idea of a "submissives how-to" kinda defeats the purpose of being submissive, at least from my perspective as a Dom. The stuff that he suggests in this book, like I said in my first paragraph, is stuff that he probably likes, but it may just be irrelevant depending on the relationship. It's no replacement for actually talking to your Dom -- believe me, we probably have suggestions for you, haha.

By the late 15th century the unification was complete, and a large single state with a capital in Moscow was formed. Many of the feudal Russian states minted coins of their own starting in the 14th century, using new and original designs and naming their own rulers. The coinage, almost unknown in the West, exhibits a fascinating diversity, with many hundreds of types in silver and bronze produced. These early coins include imitations of the Mongol (Golden Horde) dangs, coins combining Russian elements and Islamic elements and, finally, a huge range of purely Russian coins showing a surprising variety of designs including biblical themes and verses, mythological themes and animals, numerous violent scenes of fighting, stabbings, decapitations and other things one might expect from medieval coins. Other strange things found on these coins are designs showing Alexander of Macedon, scenes of homage, scenes of coin minting and ever-present Russian inscriptions naming the ruling Dukes. This catalogue includes descriptions and images of many hundreds of coins, from the inception of the native Russian coinage to the eventual unification of types under the Vasily Ivanovich of Moscow (1505-1533). Coins of the Russian states which were not conquered by Moscow (such as Lithuania and Red Russia) are also included this book. The relative rarity ranking for all the listed coins is also given, which should be of immense help to any collector of medieval coins. The information is based on the most modern numismatic research available, but is presented in a simple-to-use way, aiming to introduce this fascinating coinage to the wide circle of both collectors and researchers. This book is an English version of "Russian Coins 1353-1533" edition of 2013 which has now become a standard catalogue for Russian medieval coins collectors being actually a first publication of such scale since 19th century catalogues.

Stello (1832) is the story of the artist’s ongoing struggle against society under a variety of political systems. In this classic French novel, the despairing poet Stello consults the mysterious Doctor Noir in the hopes of being cured of the “blue devils” which torment him. Stello fears he has no choice but to devote his artistic talents to some utopian political ideal; in the hopes of dispelling his delusions, the Doctor recounts the story of three historical poets: Nicholas Gilbert, Thomas Chatterton and André Chénier, each of whom similarly came to grief in the different societies in which they found themselves. The Doctor’s final sobering prescription for Stello’s woes can be seen not only as a way forward for the novel’s protagonist, but also as surprisingly relevant words of caution for the artist of today.

Alfred de Vigny (1797-1863), poet, playwright, and novelist, was one of the strangest and most contradictory figures of the French Romantic movement: a complaining stoic, an apostle of honour who served as a police spy, a sensual misogynist. These ambiguities are found also in his intellectual life―he was the rational Romantic, the prosaic poet, the atheist believer. Vigny is perhaps best known in the English-speaking world for Servitude et grandeur militaires (1845), a collection of meditations on his time spent in the French army.

Irving Massey’s translation introduces an important French text to those who are unable to read the original version and are nevertheless interested in French literature, in Romanticism, or in the history of prose fiction. The translation is remarkably faithful to the French text; the subtleties of Vigny’s irony are preserved, and the various narrative dictions―which range from dispassionate commentary to impassioned outbursts―are reproduced with accuracy and sensitivity.

For this new edition, Dr. Massey has added an addendum to his original introduction and expanded the notes; also included is a short bibliography of Vigny studies undertaken since this translation was first published in 1963.

Dr. Blair's book provides a much needed map for graduate students through the many complexities of a Ph.D. program. The chapters on supervisors are especially helpful for providing perspective on a crucial and sometimes difficult to navigate relationship. In my role providing teaching support for Teaching Assistants, I often talk to graduate students looking for perspective or help negotiating their relationship with their supervisor. I am glad I now have this book to suggest as an additional resource in these conversations. When I received this book, I expected a useful generic handbook that I could refer to my graduate students. However, what I read was so much more! Embarking upon a career as a graduate student can be a highly stressful experience; the stakes are much higher than those associated with undergraduate studies and there are a multitude of administrative, academic and social challenges that can be particularly daunting, especially if one is not even aware of their existence. It is for this reason that Dr. Blair’s book is a much needed and appreciated addition to the literature regarding graduate education. Whilst covering the main steps involved in the elaboration of a thesis or dissertation, the author also explores rarely discussed subjects which, despite seeming perhaps tangential, can have an important impact on students’ fledgling academic careers. Her clear and honest advice is above all pragmatic, illuminating as it does a process which is often poorly understood by the students who embark upon it.

I find myself wishing that I had had this book in hand when I first started my own dissertation, and highly recommend it to all students, whatever stage they may be in their own graduate studies. Furthermore I believe that it would also be of interest to anyone outside of academia who is interested in better understanding the inner workings of post-secondary education.

This book has become my go-to when I have ANY question related to the process of writing my thesis. "What format should this lit review take?" "How do I start writing the methodology section?" The answers are all in here. And with such practical language and humour!
