Ambaum, librarian and cocreator of the web comic Unshelved, has written his first graphic novel. Stinky is a great pet cat for the boy who loves him, and they have lots of fun. There’s just one problem: Stinky won’t use his litter box, and this causes problems for the boy’s mother, who is a bit of a clean freak. Every Sunday the boy (and his parents) have to deal with an overbearing aunt who comes to dinner and criticizes everything and everyone in the house, until one Sunday when Stinky does something so totally outrageous that the aunt runs away. The large, colorful panels make this a fun read-aloud book, but librarians and other adults should be aware that some panels show Stinky being a normal cat about cleaning himself, and in the last panel Stinky finally uses the litter box. Goldstein uses simple lines and bright colors, making this a fun choice for beginning readers who like cats and don’t mind poopy paws. Preschool-Grade 2. --Kat Kan

About the Author

Sophie Goldstein's first, only, and most loved cat was named Sammy. Sammy enjoyed beating up the neighborhood cats, eating broccoli, and lying in the sun. Sophie is currently studying comics at the Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, Vermont. Her webcomic "Darwin Carmichael is Going to Hell" can be found at dcisgoingtohell.com

Gene Ambaum's favorite cat was named Sammy too. He was the greatest cat ever, a blue point Siamese who survived being run over (twice), rode in a stroller, and loved both chocolate chip cookies and bacon. When he isn't scooping his cat's box he writes "Unshelved," a comic about a library at unshelved.com

Best Kids Book of 2012-2013, in our Cat-Lovin' House!

POOPY CLAWS is a breath of fresh air--no, really!--among this year's bumper crop of new children's books, and among my favorite new books of the year, period! Gene Ambaum and Sophie Goldstein have collaborated seamlessly on this loving illustrated ode to messy pets and beloved animals that are animals instead of idealized imaginary beings.

The scatological promise of the title is fulfilled without being in and of itself offensive. Having had and loved many loving and beloved pets with nasty-to-fastidious-humans feline and canine habits (including finding a rolling in scat and dead things in the woods, etc.), POOPY CLAWS rang a bell for this reader, and Sophie Goldstein's illustrations brought Ambaum's story to vivid life with energy to spare. The fusion of effortlessly-flowing words and open, colorful, brimming-with-life pictures makes this an incredibly inviting and delightful book, cover to cover.

I wish POOPY CLAWS had been in print when my now-adult kids were kids, because we had pets like this. Lucky me, I'm now a grandfather, so I can now look forward to sharing POOPY PAWS with my grandchildren, and you bet your ever-lovin' eyes I'm going to. Highest recommendation, and I'm eager to see more from this creative team.

I love that a kid can be best friends with a cat. I wish Stinky would have learned to use the litter box. Because him pooping all over the place is nasty. So I kind of think that this book is discussing. My sister loves it though. So I give it 2 stars. But I am upping it to 4 because of my sister.

So I really thought that this book was going to be nasty. But I acutely fell in love with it. It is so cute that I just had to read it to my other daughter who is not even two yet. If you want a funny story for your kids to read then look no further . Poopy Claws Wins me over with 5 stars!

Stinky being so dirty was shocking at first, but within a few page turns I was in love. "Poopy Claws" is absolutely endearing. Hilarious comedic timing and illustrations, this is definitely one I would share with my young relatives.

Paul J. Wadell is a professor of religious studies at St. Norbert College. He specializes in Christian ethics and has taught in this field for twenty years. great basic introduction to virtue ethics

Dr. Wadell's book is a terrific introduction to the positive, life affirming topic of Christian virtue ethics. Read this book if you really want to know how even despite sin and human weakness, God's love for us all transends the sorrows of the world. His explanations are beautifully crafted and his voice is one that brings hope to those who struggle with living the good life well. Wonderful text for beginning students of a positive, affirming view of Christian ethics. A breath of fresh air in the dankness of the usual sin, damnation, and "thou-shall-nots" of many Christian ethics texts. Bravo, Dr. Wadell, your book is full of joy!

Received on time and in the condition it was described. Used, but still in good condition with very minimal highlighting on less than 5 pages of entire book. I am happy with the order.

First, I like this book.
It's a decent way to get into discussions about topics that educators in TESOL must contend with.
However, $40? No, I don't think so.
This is a decent book for $10-12. At a stretch, I'd pay as much as $20 again.
But in no way will I pay $38 for a second digital copy of this book. Limiting this to 4 machines/devices is also unreasonable.

25 Beautiful Hand-drawn Grayscale Sketch Designs – printed on one side of the page

[[VIDEOID:af7ee71bcb5b5b4f144aa1dabf120085]]This is an absolutely beautiful book of grayscale sketches. I'm fairly new to this way of coloring and as soon as I saw this book, I had to have it. I had never heard of Bennett Klein before but I will certainly be following him from this point on. The designs are beautiful and unusual, especially in grayscale where so many of the coloring books available are merely photographs instead of hand-drawn sketches.

The designs are all flowing and almost lyrical in their composition. Women make up a lot of the designs, with unusual hairstyles and poses. There are animals and cultural symbols as well as some fairly hippie-vibe young women. It's just a great combination of unusual designs that will be a blast to color.

I will go into detail about the book below for those who are interested; however, here is an overview of what I found:

25 Hand-drawn sketches in grayscale
Designs are printed on one side of non-perforated paper
Glue Binding
Easy to open to flat position for coloring
Designs do not merge into the binding
Alcohol and water-based markers bleed through the page
Gel pens leave shadows of color on the back of page
Coloring pencils work great with this paper

The designs are printed on thin, white, non-perforated paper. The back of the page is printed with the Colour My Sketchbook emblem. The binding is glued rather than sewn. The designs do not merge into the binding. If you choose to remove a page from the book, you will have to cut it out but will not lose any portion of the design. I could easily get the book to lay in flat position for coloring.

I test my coloring books with various medium even though I generally use coloring pencils for grayscale. I will list the mediums I used for testing in the comments section of this review. Here is what my tests showed:

Alcohol and water-based markers all bled through the page. Gel pens and India ink pens left easily discernible color shadows on the back of the page. Coloring pencils worked very well with this paper. The soft lead pencils went on thick and blended easily. The hard lead pencils left dents on the back of the page.

I usually use soft lead pencils for grayscale projects. That is what I did with my first project. I used Prismacolor Premier Soft core pencils in usual grayscale order (light on first, dark second, and medium tones last for blending.) I found that I preferred a more ethereal look for the ballerina, so I went over the whole design with lighter pencils, especially 10% cool gray. It muted the entire design and gave me the look I was hoping for.

Best adult coloring book EVER

The Color My Sketchbook is the first adult coloring book that will get all images colored. A lot of the coloring books you buy today have a lot of filler stuff in them that will never get colored but I WILL end up coloring all of the images in this book. Pretty much the best adult coloring book ever!!! xoxo thanks Bennett Klein

Wonderful, unique and fun!

This book is great! I don't buy many coloring books, but I'm very glad I found this one. I would say it is my favorite. The artwork is unique and well-done, and fun/interesting to do - I use Prismacolor pencils. I can't speak to the use of markers/bleeding, but the paper is lovely for pencils. The images are far enough out that the binding does not present any issues. I don't consider myself to be a coloring book addict, but I am expecting Mr. Klein's second book any day and can't wait.

I love the suede-like cover material, once everything is colored, it would be a great coffee-table conversation maker.

About the Author
Tim Gilles has authored or co-authored several textbooks and has been active in professional associations for many years. He was president and a board member of the California Automotive Teachers (CAT), a board member and election committee chair of the North American Council of Automotive Teachers (NACAT), a member of the California Community College Chancellor's Trade and Industry Advisory Committee, and education committee chair for the Santa Barbara Chapter of the Independent Automotive Professionals Association. Mr. Gilles has also served several terms as a board member of the Santa Barbara Automotive Service Council and is active in industry associations such as AERA, The Automotive Repair Coalition, and IATN, including delivering presentations at numerous conferences. He was an automotive teacher for 38 years and is professor emeritus in the Automotive Technology Department at Santa Barbara City College. Mr. Gilles holds the industry certifications of ASE Master Automotive Technician and ASE Master Engine Machinst.

Great book!!

As an automotive student I found this book to be very helpful. It deals with all the basics of todays advanced automobiles. It cover all areas from: basic electricity, ohms law, engine performance, ignition, cooling, emissions, transmissions, brakes and even a little auto body. It deals with the different subjects from beginning to end.You don't have to know anything(exept read)to understand them. A must for any automotive enthusiast.

Automotive service inspection maintenance repair

The book appears to indeed make a valiant attempt at explaining topics of automotive service. Unfortunately, in some cases it lacks real practicality when it comes to using the information in reality. Not enough information is available in some cases to really service your vehicle safely. It does cover a huge range of topics, which is really good, but I dont think a 30 word paragraph can really help someone properly repair or troubleshoot a component in a motor vehicle. The book is worth it (US$15) in the context of beginner training, but should not be bought for executing actual repairs, like what I did. That was a huge disappointment. This book also has a LOT of wonderful pictures and illustrations, which is indeed helpful. The author should NEVER have used some of the over-simplified illustrations, they only serve to confuse the issue. A beginner is likely to think the what they see in the book is exactly what is, in reality.

From many angles this is a good start for the serious hobbyist or professional tech. The info is explained clearly and logicly organized. The pictures are clear, simple and helpful. If read cover to cover this is a good way to get in to automotive technology.

Looks Very Good at First Glance - Impressive Size and Qty

How can you argue with a cookbook containing 1000 recipes with pictures of ALL of them. At first glance you would say this is the greatest low fat, salt, sugar and cholesterol cookbook of all time. But wait, on page 566, one of many, is a recipe with 630 calories, 38 carbs, 40g of fat and 24g of Saturated Fat considered to fit this criteria. In my mind this is way too much for this type of cookbook. Where is the low salt listing for this item. And where is the low cholesterol listing. I entered the ingredients into my nutritional calculator and find that it has 128mg of Cholesterol and 660mg of sodium. Looking throughout the book salt and cholesterol is not listed on ANY recipe. How do we know what recipes fit the low salt and/or low cholesterol criteria.

It's obvious that this cookbook is not what it appears. It is a compilation of low fat AND low sugar and COULD contain low salt and low cholesterol recipes. The latter two types we really don't know.

Having stated the above, I still think this cookbook has value. Thus I gave it 3 stars. You just have to watch what you are preparing and check the nutritional information for salt and cholesterol yourself if you are trying to limit these.

Don't be DECEIVED!!!

If you want to make low fat-food, don't waste your money here. This cookbook claims in 2 inch type to have 1000 LOW FAT recipes. It does NOT. In fact, almost *NONE* of the recipes are low fat -- yes, previous reviewer, they don't taste low fat because they are, in fact, mostly HIGH FAT! These recipes call for whole milk, multiple tablespoons of butter, sour cream, and get this: "full-fat cheese." A typical recipe from this book has 20 - 30 g of fat per serving (and one even has 49g fat/ 614 calories -- that's 441 calories out of 614 from fat!). Given that the medical community recommends a max of 65g per DAY, well, eat one of these you get rice cakes for the rest of the day.

As someone who must eat low-fat for health reasons, I can't eat anything from this cookbook. Stay away from it if you care about fat content!

Forget the title, and just enjoy the book..it's a nice one to have

One of my co-workers brought this cookbook into work for all of us to browse through during slow periods and at lunch. I really enjoyed looking through it and of course looked it up on Amazon to see all the info.

I will say that I bought mine used, for about $5. The book is VERY heavy - like a physician's desk reference or something large and somewhat cumbersome. But the pictures are beautiful and each page is laid out with a gorgeous color photo of the recipe, then the full recipe, nutritional information, and step by step photo instructions, therefore each page IS a recipe card.

The recipes are different, unusual, and yet the ingredients don't seem to be bazaar or far fetched from what I have seen. And the directions look far more simple than each beautiful photo display of the finished product appears.

I don't know why it is titled as it is. So, I say 'forgettaboutit' and just enjoy the cookbook for what it IS - a beautifully laid out, interesting, different cookbook that is fun for your guests to flip through while you are entertaining them, and fun to try something different.
