About the Author
Marlow is a Registered Professional Engineer and holds a BA and BSEE from Lehigh, and MSEE from Northeastern and an MBA from the University of Arizona.

Larry Smith, MD, is Executive Vice President and Physician-in-Chief, North Shore-LIJ Health System, and Dean, Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. As physician-in-chief, Dr. Smith is the health system's senior physician on all clinical issues. He previously served as North Shore-LIJ's chief medical officer. Other previous positions include Dean, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, NYC, and Chair of Medical Education, founder and director of the school's Institute for Medical Education, Professor of Medicine and attending physician. He joined the faculty of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 1994 as Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine and Residency Program Director. Dr. Smith has held senior leadership positions in national societies for medical education and residency training, authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in medical education, and has received many awards and honors from national and international organizations. He is a member-at-large of the National Board of Medical Examiners and a member of the Board of Visitors of Fordham College. He is also a former regent of the American College of Physicians and former member of the board of directors of the American Board of Internal Medicine. In April 2011, Dr. Smith was elected to the American College of Physicians.

Not completely convinced

There seems to be some disagreement on the format of this book. The author chose to present the information in a very stodgy, rigid, question and answer style of format. As a reader (or a student..) you will either like this approach....or not. I can see both sides of this disagreement....the material is presented very factually and with supporting documentation, but the 'answers' to the questions don't allow for much discussion. While very much 'on point' there is very little room for any sort of diversion which would add to the usefulness of the book. The material is presented under major topic headings which makes it somewhat usable, although I will admit that locating specific information can be a bit tiresome.

I can find no major disagreement with the information as presented. It is a fairly thorough walk (trudge..???) through the varied topics that surround welding. I found the material informative and the images quite clear in their stated purpose. There are no color images depicted, but the black/white and line drawings appear very well done. The topic headings seem well thought out and the material presented logically. So, like I said, no major faults as far as the material goes. But, therein lies some of the problem. Looking for something specific can be a major exercise and in fact, the material may not be adequately covered. This because the 'answers' are specific to very specific questions....so what do you do if the information you need is similar but not exactly as depicted in the 'question'??? I will tell you what to do.....Look somewhere else!!

There are a couple of saving graces to the book. One is the more than adequate glossary. It is well done and seems quite complete. There is also an index which DOES save you a little effort when trying to look something up...although it is only about six pages long...so it's not terribly complete. And, cross-referencing is almost non-existent.

So, three stars for 'WELDING ESSENTIALS' because it is just a little too obtuse. The inherent problems with this style of format are hard to overcome in a READABLE, quality book. Would not recommend this as a solo purchase for a welding primer, although as an adjunct piece it is really quite good and has an abundance of information on the individual subjects that are covered. I am going to keep it and read it again (and probably again!!..). Lots of useful information, just hard to dig through. After a thorough second reading, it may come up to four stars (It's close!!..)

About the Author
Blandine Calais-Germain is the author of the bestselling "Anatomy of Movement", "The Female Pelvis: Anatomy and Exercises", and "Anatomy of Breathing". In addition to being a dancer and a dance teacher, she is a certified physical therapist and attended the French School of Orthopedics and Massage in Paris. Known for her innovative method for teaching the physical structures of anatomy in relation to movement, she teaches workshops to students from all over the world. She lives in Limoux, France.

Best thing to buy if you have pelvic organ prolapse

I suffer from pelvic organ prolapse (grade 3 cystocele & rectocele, grade 1 uterine) after damage from vaginal delivery of my first child.

I have purchased Hold it Sister by Mary O'Dwyer, POP: Silent Epidemic by Sherrie Palm, the Hab-It DVD, the Pfilates DVD, the Myself Trainer, the Kegel8 Ultra, and have had numerous appointments with PTs, urogynocologists and other specialists. Everything has been somewhat helpful, but if I had to pick just one product to buy for the most effect, it would be The Female Pelvis by Blandine Calais-Germain.

She breaks down different muscle groups in such detail that you can really target them individually, rather than just trying to 'lift the pelvic floor'. I will buy this for anyone I meet who has pelvic floor issues, that's how good I think it is.

When I was in graduate school, I was a Teaching Fellow in physiology and went on to further studies in biochemistry. I also attended medical school for a while, but ended up working as a research scientist. Now, I teach meditation and have a developed yoga practice in addition to being a personal coach with graduate education in psychology as well. In short, I think I am well-qualified to evaluate this book.

In general, I love this author's work and particularly liked Anatomy of Movement. I didn't like the Female Pelvis quite as much, but I still think it is very good. If I was able to, I would rate it a 4.5. Like all of this writer's work, the material is thoughtfully developed and presented in an easy to understand manner. There are also lots of diagrams that are very clear and compliment the text.

The difficulty with the pelvic region is that it is very hard to visualize it in three dimensions. This presents a challenge to the author and I think that he does a very good job of conveying three dimensions through all different kinds of diagrams.

The book starts out with the basic skeltal structure and then adds more detail a little bit at a time. At the same time, corresponding functionality is discussed and this keeps the book interesting and helps with memory attention. The average person can certainly go through this book easily, which is a testimony to the clarity and organization of the book.

With that said, I think to really learn the anatomy thoroughly one needs either the experience of dissecting this region or an augmentation of this material with useful photographs that show more detail and how everything fits together. For the average person, this may not be necessary, but for people in PT, yoga, massage or medical-related fields, it would solidify your understanding and help you to lock it in.

One think that is really special about this book is that it is mostly pictures with concise descriptions. The logical development of the topic allows it to flow and it doesn't deviate from its purpose, which is to educate women about the importance of the pelvis, how it changes through the lifecycle and how you can keep it healthy through exercise.

In reality, one book can't be all things to all people. This book is no exception and it is one of the best of its kind. If you are very interested in this area, I would also consider purchasing Pelvic Power for Men and Women: Mind/Body Exercises for Strength, Flexibility, Posture, and Balance. This book has a bit of a different angle, more exercises and more text. I think the two books are very complimentary and if you are serious about learning this anatomy and keeping your pelvis fit, you ought to have both to get the maximum results and understanding.

If you have a deep interest in this topic, you can find more resources on my listmania lists. There are several general anatomy texts all with different strengths and weaknesses listed. This would be useful information for people who need a very in-depth understanding or who have difficulty visualizing three dimensions from diagrams.

I'm going to just be real frank here, since you're looking at this book, you probably don't mind: I did the exercises in this book while I was pregnant and after having my baby. I did not have a problem of peeing when I sneezed while I was pregnant UNLESS I went a few days without doing the Kegel muscle exercises. I pushed out a 10 pound baby with no episiotomy and no anesthesia and had a very minor first degree tear that did not require stitches. I also attribute this to some stretching exercises in addition to this book, and to laboring and pushing in warm water. But this book definitely helped me prepare and recover my pelvis and understand better what was going on down there.
