The engine featured in this book was designed for use in educational settings. Once assembled, the engine will spin a flywheel when the bottom is heated and ice is placed on top. This is a hot air engine design, sometimes referred to as a Stirling Engine. The engine makes motion by exercising a temperature differential. The bottom half of the engine must be warmed to about 250 degrees F, and the top of the engine must be cooled with cold water or ice. When these conditions are present, the engine will spin between 100 and 200 rpm.
The primary components of this engine are soda cans, copper wire, and an old CD. The adhesive that is used for construction is readily available at hardware stores.
This engine is a fun project for students, home builders, hobbyists, and anyone who wants to learn how to make their own hot air engine from soda cans.

Great Book!! Definitely a Quick and Easy build!!

The Quick and Easy Stirling Engine is a great book! This book includes an introduction to the tools and materials needed, how the engine works, assembly, instructions, pictures, diagrams and even contains a troubleshooting guide.
Jim Larson has created a set of instructions that allows the average individual to make a Stirling engine. I like these instructions because he considered that most people will only have simple tools and household items to build the engine with.
I read through these instructions once. Went to the nearest dollar store and purchased supplies for under $5.00. I was able to build a Stirling engine in one evening by going step by step through the book. If you've followed his directions dutifully you will most likely not have to use the troubleshooting information.
My little Stirling engine started chugging away on the first try! I think this is a great place to begin if you want to understand how a Stirling engine works. It will also give you early success and motivation to build new Stirling engine configurations.
I'm glad I bought Jim's book. I also purchased his other books and look forward to building the other designs that are available.
On the first page of the book Jim lists his contact information. After building my Stirling engine I contacted him and he was glad to have a conversation. Jim Has a You Tube channel and a web site with a lot more information to help you if it is needed.
After I build this engine I was inspired to create an information sight about Stirling engines [...] this site has links to Jim's website and information.

Neither quick nor easy

My son and I tried building this device twice, neither of which ever ran. He ended up using the devices as "sculptures" of Stirling engines for his school project... I am glad to hear the device described in this book worked for most - I would hate to think others suffered the way we did. For us, it was an exercise in pure frustration - literally hours and hours of trouble-shooting, to no avail. The book itself is reasonably well-written, though there are some holes in the instructions; photographs are somewhat helpful, but again, not complete (and in at least one case, misleading). I think if you are already familiar with the principles and design, these deficits may not be noticeable, but we had never built anything like this.

START SMALL AND THEN GO BIG!

I started building steam engines over fifty years ago from old bicycle pumps, what great fun! The really neat thing about the plans in this book, is that they tell you how to build simple Stirling Engines that run on hot air, and are much safer than steam for the novice. This is a great project book for the whole family, and will pry your kids away from their iPhones, iPads, and TV long enough to have fun learning about physics.
