The analysis looks at both fascist ideas and practice, and at the often uneasy relationship between the two.

On appropriate occasions, the authors disagree with each other and have not been forced into any artificial "consensus," offering readers the chance to engage with the debates over a phenomenon that, more than any other single factor, led humankind into the catastrophe of the Second World War.

Good reference book

This is a compendium of essays written by scholars for scholars. As such it offers a broad range of material that is quite comprehensive. As is typical of books of this type, however, there is considerable variation in the quality of the writing from essay to essay. For reasons that I have never understood, many academics write poorly. Part of the problem is that often they tend to use arcane language that is meant to impress their intended audience (i.e. fellow academics) rather than communicate in a more accessible manner in an attempt to reach a wider audience. In this book, many of the essays fall into this category. That is too bad because much of what is contained herein deserves to be studied and understood by the widest possible readership. Even a casual perusal of the contents of this book demonstrates clearly that Fascism has been subsumed by Nazism. Fascism, theory and practice, was much more diverse in terms of it's origins and it seems to this reviewer anyway, was theoretically and philosophically more thoroughly thought through over a longer period of time. The movement fostered dialog and debate, something that did not occur in Germany. As such and despite being currently in disrepute, Fascism is undoubtedly more likely to be viable again at some future time. This book offers the scholar an opportunity to be exposed to the breadth and depth of the movement, all in one volume, and as such it has considerable merit. It would get full marks if it could be edited to be more accessible.
